On June 26, 1977, Elvis Presley’s private plane landed in Indianapolis.
Fans waiting nearby saw the familiar sunglasses, dark hair and smile as Elvis stepped onto the tarmac. At the time, it looked like another arrival during another Elvis tour.
Today, the footage carries a completely different weight.
That night, Elvis would perform at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. It became the last concert he ever gave. Elvis died at Graceland only 51 days later, on August 16, 1977.
There was another historic moment waiting for him at the airport.
RCA executives presented Elvis with a plaque marking the company’s two-billionth record pressing, a milestone reached during production of his upcoming album Moody Blue. Cameras captured Elvis accepting the honor before he left the airport and went to rest ahead of the evening concert.

The surviving airport film is remarkable because viewers are seeing Elvis on the very day of his final stage appearance.
Knowing what happened afterward makes every ordinary detail feel different.
Elvis was only 42 years old, but by 1977 his health had visibly changed from the energetic performer audiences remembered from earlier years. Still, it would be wrong to claim the airport film proves Elvis knew he was dying. Nothing establishes that.
As far as everyone around him knew, there were more concerts ahead.
Elvis was actually scheduled to begin another tour in August 1977, starting with a show in Portland, Maine. Graceland records that on the morning of August 16 he was preparing to fly out that evening for the next leg of touring.
But first came Indianapolis.
Nearly 18,000 fans packed Market Square Arena that evening. Elvis performed songs including “Jailhouse Rock,” “It’s Now or Never,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Hurt” and “Hound Dog.” He finished, as he so often had, with “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”
Before leaving the stage, Elvis offered the audience a farewell that sounded completely ordinary at the time:
“We’ll meet you again. God bless. Adios.”
There was supposed to be another show.
There was supposed to be another tour.
Instead, the airport cameras in Indianapolis had unknowingly captured Elvis Presley arriving for the final concert of his life.
That is what makes the June 26 footage so haunting: nobody watching him step off that plane knew they were witnessing the beginning of Elvis Presley’s last night onstage.
