Michael Jackson and Prince spent decades being compared.
Both dominated the 1980s. Both became extraordinary performers. Both crossed musical genres and influenced generations of artists.
But when Snoop Dogg has spoken about Michael Jackson, his admiration has been unusually clear.
Long before Snoop himself became a music legend, Michael was already one of the stars he looked up to.
In a remarkable 1994 interview, when Snoop was only 22 and Doggystyle had made him one of the hottest rappers in America, he was asked how he felt about becoming so famous.
Snoop immediately brought up Michael.
He remembered listening to Michael Jackson while growing up and then said something that revealed exactly where he placed him:
“Ain’t nobody else bigger than me but Michael Jackson.”
That was in 1994, when Snoop’s own career was exploding.
Yet even then, he saw Michael as being on another level.
Michael’s reach helps explain why. Thriller remains recognized by Guinness World Records as the best-selling album in history, with estimated worldwide sales exceeding 67 million copies. Its songs crossed pop, rock and R&B while Michael’s videos and performances reached audiences far beyond the United States.
Snoop Dogg Talks About Michael Jackson
In that interview footage, Snoop recalls actually speaking with Michael and even being asked to contribute to a track. His reaction is telling: despite already being famous himself, he remembered being almost stunned that Michael Jackson had personally called him.
And Snoop certainly has not dismissed Prince.
When he and other performers were asked about the gold standard for Super Bowl halftime shows ahead of the 2022 game, Michael Jackson and Prince were both immediately named. Michael transformed the halftime show in 1993, while Prince’s rain-soaked 2007 performance later became another benchmark.
Prince’s musicianship was extraordinary. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame describes him as a genre-defying composer, performer and multi-instrumentalist who blended rock, funk, soul, pop and jazz.
So this does not need to become a story about tearing Prince down to praise Michael.
There is one important correction to the viral caption: the line “Michael Jackson wasn’t just the King of Pop, he was the king of music, period” circulates widely in social-media clips, but I could not trace it to a reliable original Snoop Dogg interview. I would not present that exact wording as authenticated.
What we can document is arguably just as powerful.
Thirty years ago, while Snoop Dogg was becoming one of the biggest names in rap, he openly said the only entertainer he considered bigger than himself was Michael Jackson.
For a man surrounded by legends, that tells you exactly how enormous Michael looked from inside the music industry itself.
