Here’s a strange one for you.
There’s a song Elvis “performed” on stage in Las Vegas, night after night, that he never actually sang. Not one single note of it.
He’d stand at the microphone and speak every word, slow and soft, like a man reading a letter out loud. Behind him, one of his own singers carried the melody.
That singer was Sherrill Nielsen, Elvis’s high tenor. Through his mid-1970s Vegas shows, Nielsen would sing the tune while Elvis simply talked his way through the lyrics, line by line. It’s a tender, haunting thing to hear, and it doesn’t sound like any other record in his catalog.
The song is called “Softly, As I Leave You.”
A live version, recorded on Dec 13, 1975, was released a few years later in March 1978, tucked away as the B-side of “Unchained Melody.” Plenty of fans owned the single for years without ever flipping it over.
Here’s that recording, so you can hear Elvis speak a whole song while another voice sings it.
Elvis speaking the words while his tenor sings the melody
Give it a minute. The spoken delivery sneaks up on you. There’s something about hearing him almost whisper a goodbye, with that soaring tenor rising behind him, that lands harder than a lot of songs he belted out full voice.
Now here’s the part that’ll catch Priscilla fans off guard.
In 2025, Priscilla published a memoir about her life in the years after Elvis. The title? “Softly, As I Leave You: Life After Elvis.” The very same words as the song he used to speak on that Vegas stage.
Two facts, sitting right next to each other. Make of them what you will.
Maybe it’s a coincidence. Maybe the phrase just stuck somewhere deep. Either way, it’s a quiet little thread running from a darkened showroom in 1975 all the way to a book cover fifty years later.
Most people have never heard this recording, even folks who grew up on Elvis. It isn’t one of the hits that gets played on the radio, and the spoken-word style kept it off a lot of greatest-hits collections. That’s a big part of why it’s worth three minutes of your time tonight.
