Elvis Started Singing the Wrong Song on Purpose. His Band Kept Playing for Almost a Minute Before He Yelled for Them to Stop.

It was the closing night of his 1973 run in Las Vegas, and Elvis was in a goofy, playful mood.

The band kicked off one of his biggest hits. The opening was unmistakable. Everybody in that showroom knew exactly what was coming next.

Except Elvis started singing a completely different song over the top of it.

And he kept right on going. For almost a full minute, the band played one tune while Elvis crooned the words to another one entirely, straight-faced, as if nothing in the world was wrong.

The hit the band was playing was “Suspicious Minds,” one of the most electric numbers in his whole act. Here it is done the proper way, so you know what the crowd was expecting to hear.

Elvis performing the hit his band thought they were playing

The words Elvis decided to sing instead belonged to “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” the big, soaring ballad he loved so much. On its own it’s one of the most powerful things he ever performed.

The ballad Elvis sang over the top of it

Now imagine those two colliding at the same time. That’s precisely what happened on Sept 3, 1973, and someone had the tape rolling. After nearly a minute of the musical pileup, Elvis finally broke and shouted, “Wait a minute! You don’t know what you’re doing. Hold the show. Cut!”

Here’s the best part. He’s the one who started the whole mess, and he turned around and blamed the band for it.

The moment the two songs crash into each other

Listen for the second he gives up and calls the whole thing off. You can hear the grin in his voice, and the room eats it up.

By 1973 Elvis had sung his biggest hits thousands of times, and he’d get restless doing them the same way night after night. So he played. He’d change a lyric, crack a joke mid-song, or pull a stunt like this one just to keep himself and the band on their toes.

Plenty of those moments happened and were lost to the room. This one got caught, and all these years later it still makes people laugh out loud on the first listen. Give it a play and see if you can keep a straight face longer than Elvis did.
