More than five decades after divorcing Elvis Presley, Priscilla Presley is still being asked what life with the King was really like.
And her answer is much more complicated than the fairytale people saw from outside Graceland.
In a recent 2026 interview, Priscilla said being beside someone as famous as Elvis became an extraordinary “lesson in life.” She also teased that there are still many stories about Elvis that have never been completely told, especially in movies and documentaries. Yet she was equally clear about something else: preserving Elvis’s legacy remains deeply important to her.
Her 2025 memoir, Softly, As I Leave You: Life After Elvis, went even deeper.
Priscilla explained that she had spent much of her young life living inside Elvis’s world. His career, friends, schedule and enormous fame dominated everything around them.
She still loved him.
In fact, while discussing their divorce with CBS, Priscilla said she remained “very much in love with Elvis” and made clear she did not leave because that love disappeared.
She left because she felt she could no longer live that life.

Priscilla described wanting something that was almost impossible when married to one of the most famous men alive: Elvis to herself.
His entourage was constantly nearby. Fans waited outside. Touring and celebrity consumed enormous parts of their relationship. Priscilla eventually realized she had spent so much time being “Elvis’s wife” that she needed to discover who Priscilla actually was.
That does not mean she now describes Elvis simply as a monster or a secret villain.
She has spoken openly about his jealousy, traditional expectations and the unequal nature of their marriage. But when Piers Morgan directly asked whether Elvis had been a controlling influence, Priscilla answered that she did not think of him that way.
Even after their 1973 divorce, Elvis and Priscilla remained close and continued raising Lisa Marie together.
And decades after his death, Priscilla became one of the central figures responsible for preserving Graceland and Elvis’s legacy rather than allowing the estate to disappear.
So the real revelation is subtler than the viral headlines suggest.
Priscilla does not say the Elvis she married was secretly an entirely different man. She says loving him was real — but living inside the extraordinary world surrounding Elvis Presley eventually became a life she could no longer live.
