On February 28, 1984, Michael Jackson walked into the Grammy Awards as the biggest pop star in the world and left with a record no artist had ever achieved before. At just 25 years old, Michael won eight Grammy Awards in a single night, breaking the previous record of seven.
The night was driven by the enormous success of Thriller. Michael won Album of the Year for Thriller and Record of the Year for “Beat It.” He also won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Thriller,” Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for “Beat It” and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for “Billie Jean.”
He also won Best R&B Song for “Billie Jean” and shared Producer of the Year with Quincy Jones.
Interestingly, not all eight awards were technically for Thriller. Seven were connected to the album, while Michael’s eighth came from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which won Best Recording for Children.

One of the most memorable moments came after Michael won his seventh award. He told the audience he had promised actress Katharine Hepburn that if he won seven, he would finally take off his sunglasses. He did. Later that night, “Beat It” won Record of the Year, giving Michael his eighth Grammy and completing a historic sweep. The record made the ceremony one of the defining moments of the Thriller era.
Michael Jackson arrived as a superstar. Eight Grammys later, he had made Grammy history.
