Michael Jackson became known around the world as the “King of Pop,” and his awards record helps explain why.
Across his career, Michael won 13 competitive Grammy Awards from 38 nominations. He also received the Grammy Legend Award in 1993 and was given the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010, after his death. But one night stands above almost everything else.
On February 28, 1984, Michael arrived at the Grammys during the incredible success of Thriller and walked away with eight awards in a single night.
At the time, no artist had ever done that.
His wins included Album of the Year for Thriller, Record of the Year for “Beat It”, awards for “Billie Jean” and “Beat It,” and Producer of the Year alongside Quincy Jones. Seven of the eight Grammys were connected to Thriller.

Michael’s Grammy wins also showed how difficult he was to place inside just one musical category. In 1984 alone, he won awards across pop, rock and R&B, something few artists have ever managed. His first Grammy had come four years earlier for “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough.” Later wins included “We Are the World,” Leave Me Alone and the “Scream” music video with Janet Jackson.
By then, “King of Pop” was more than a catchy nickname.
Michael had dominated albums, singles, music videos, dancing and live performance while collecting some of the biggest honors in the industry.
