Lisa Marie Named the Elvis Songs That Meant the Most to Her. The One That Hit Her Hardest Wasn’t One of His Big Hits.

Ask most folks for their favorite Elvis song and you’ll hear the big ones. “Suspicious Minds.” “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” “Hound Dog.”

But the person who knew him best had a different list. His daughter.

Lisa Marie grew up watching her father sing on stage, night after night, especially his tender 1970s ballads. “I’d see him perform those songs regularly so I had an attachment to them,” she said. Those weren’t just songs on the radio to her. They were her dad, up there, live.

In 2012 she named the ones that stayed with her the most, and here’s the surprise. They weren’t his famous hits at all.

The song she said hit her hardest

This is the performance Lisa Marie pointed to, from his famous “Aloha from Hawaii” show in 1973.

The song is “It’s Over,” and if you’ve never really sat with it, this is the version to hear. It’s from that worldwide Hawaii broadcast, Elvis in the white suit, pouring everything into a quiet ballad. Lisa Marie had a strong word for how it affected her, and once you hear him sing it you’ll understand why.

She didn’t stop at one, though. She rattled off a few more that most casual fans skip right over.

There was “Mary in the Morning,” which she simply called “a song I just love.” There was “You Gave Me a Mountain,” a big dramatic ballad. And she felt one song in particular, “Separate Ways,” never got close to the attention it deserved.

Then there was “Just Pretend,” and this one is worth playing all on its own.

One of her picks, in full

Here’s “Just Pretend,” another of the favorites she named.

Listen to the two songs back to back and you start to hear what she heard. These aren’t the crowd-pleasers. They’re the aching, big-hearted ballads, the ones a daughter would connect to after watching her father sing them over and over from the front row.

It’s a different way into Elvis’s music. Not the jukebox hits, but the songs the people closest to him held onto.

Start with “It’s Over” up top. That’s the one she said hit hardest, and after a listen you may just agree with her.
