The man could walk onto a Las Vegas stage and own the whole room. A sold-out house of thousands, all of them screaming for him. You’d think nothing could rattle Elvis Presley up there.
Priscilla says the truth was a little different, and most fans would never believe it.
Before we get to what he said, take a look at Elvis in his Vegas prime. This is the kind of show that packed those rooms night after night, jumpsuit and all.
Elvis on the Las Vegas stage at the height of his fame
Hard to imagine that man being nervous, isn’t it?
But that’s exactly what Priscilla remembers. “People wouldn’t believe that he was nervous when he would do a show like in Vegas,” she said in an interview. “He was insecure and wanted to make sure that he was okay, which is hard to believe.”
So the biggest star in town, the one who made grown women faint, walked off that stage looking for reassurance. And there was one person he turned to every single time.
He turned to Priscilla.
The moment the show ended, the same words came out of him. In her words, “Every show that he came out was, ‘How was I? Was I okay? Did it come out?'”
Read that again and let it sink in. The King of Rock and Roll, fresh off a triumph, quietly asking his wife if he’d done alright. He wasn’t fishing for compliments. He honestly wanted to know.
Priscilla shared the memory in a television interview, and you can see how much tenderness is still there when she talks about him.

Watch her face as she tells it, and you’ll understand why this stuck with her all these years.
It says something sweet about the two of them. For all the fame and all the noise, the opinion that mattered most to Elvis was hers. He wanted her to be proud.
So the next time you imagine him commanding a Vegas crowd, remember the quieter moment right after, when the curtain came down and a nervous husband leaned over to ask the woman he loved three little words. How was I?
Press play and meet the Elvis his fans rarely got to see.
