When Tina and Ann Traded the Red Carpet for a Subway Station

Back in 1975, a movie premiere did something no one expected. Most stars want fancy hotels and red carpets, but the cast of the rock opera Tommy went underground.

On March 18, the famous 57th Street subway station became the hottest club in New York City. Over 500 people crowded into the train station to celebrate the film.  This was the night the world first saw the power of the Acid Queen.

In the film, she played a character that gave teenagers nightmares for weeks. She moved with a wild energy that most people had never seen before. Her voice was louder and more soulful than the original version of the song.

Fans still talk about how terrifying and amazing that moment felt. One viewer said the portrayal of the Acid Queen was so brutal it stayed with them for years. Another person mentioned that no one could ever blow a crowd away quite like she did.

The party in the subway was a celebration of hard work and new beginnings. While the cameras flashed, Tina was not alone in her success. Her co-star Ann-Margret was right there by her side, also wearing a beautiful Bob Mackie dress.

These two women formed a deep bond while making this wild movie. They were two of the strongest ladies in show business, but they found a quiet friendship behind the scenes. Ann-Margret later shared how much she respected the talent and heart that Tina brought to the set every single day.

These two women showed the world that you can be glamorous and tough at the same time. They took a gritty subway station and turned it into a place of pure magic.
