The film made nearly a billion dollars worldwide. But what you watched in theaters wasn’t the original version. Scenes were filmed, edited, and then quietly removed before anyone got to see them.
Here’s what didn’t make the cut — and why.
The Diana Ross scenes
Kat Graham was cast as Diana Ross and filmed multiple scenes for the movie. Ross and Michael shared one of the most important relationships in his career — she was a major figure in his early years, and they starred together in The Wiz in 1978.
All of Graham’s scenes were cut before release. She confirmed it herself on social media, citing “certain legal considerations.” The film never explained further.
A Look Back At What Was Cut From The Movie
The Neverland Ranch raid
The original version of the film included a dramatization of a police raid on Neverland Ranch. That sequence was removed.
A settlement agreement from a 1993 civil lawsuit contained a clause that legally prevented any depiction or mention of the case in film portrayals of Michael’s life. The scene had to go.
The “Man in the Mirror” moment
Sources close to production confirmed that the original cut included a scene in which Michael stares into a mirror as police lights flash behind him — set at the moment the 1993 allegations became public.
It was one of the more emotionally charged sequences in the film’s early version. It was cut for the same legal reasons as the Neverland raid.
Michael biopic – official trailer
The reshoots alone reportedly cost an additional $10 to $15 million. The final film now ends in 1988 — before any of this happened.
As of now, the film has grossed $959 million, making it the first-ever musical biopic to cross this level.
You watched a movie about Michael Jackson. But there’s another version of it that nobody will ever see.
