The Real Story Behind Who Actually Discovered Michael Jackson

For decades, one version of this story has been repeated so many times it became fact. Diana Ross discovered the Jackson 5. She saw something in a young Michael Jackson that nobody else did. She brought them to Motown, introduced them to the world, and launched one of the greatest careers in music history.

THAT’S NOT ACTUALLY WHAT HAPPENED. ITS A MYTH!

The Jackson 5 started in Gary, Indiana in 1964 — a tough city in a tough era. Joe Jackson pulled three of his sons together and put them to work. Michael and Marlon joined two years later.

By 1967 they were winning talent competitions at the Apollo Theater in Harlem and Chicago’s Regal Theater.

IT WAS GLADYS KNIGHT WHO FIRST SPOTTED THEM AND SENT THEIR DEMO TAPE TO MOTOWN.

Berry Gordy rejected it. The group bounced between labels, eventually signing with Steeltown Records in 1968.

Their rising reputation finally pulled Motown back in — and this time it was producer Bobby Taylor who personally walked the Jacksons into the building and convinced Gordy to sign them.

Diana Ross hosted a party for them at her home in Los Angeles. Their debut album was even called Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5. But Motown’s own records confirm what actually happened — the discovery story was a marketing decision.

Ross was already a superstar. Attaching her name to the Jackson 5 gave them instant credibility and a smoother entry into the mainstream.

She mentored Michael and turned him into a champion, and their relationship was real. But she didn’t find them.

GLADYS KNIGHT FOUND THEM FIRST. BOBBY TAYLOR GOT THEM SIGNED.

The names that actually opened the door were gradually forgotten. But what they discovered in the Jackson 5 family was their most treasured gift to the world: Michael Jackson, the King of Pop!
