Everybody knows how Elvis Presley’s career started: “That’s All Right,” cut by accident during a coffee break at Sun Records in July 1954. What far fewer people know is what he was actually trying to record that night before the accident happened.
He was trying to record a gentle little ballad called “I Love You Because.”
That was the plan for the session. Elvis, guitarist Scotty Moore, and bassist Bill Black spent hours working on slow, tender material — and getting nowhere. It came out stiff. Producer Sam Phillips eventually called a break, and during that break Elvis started messing about with a blues song, which became “That’s All Right” and changed music.
So they set “I Love You Because” aside. It appeared later on his debut album but was never a single, and it has sat quietly in the catalog ever since.

Listen, and you’ll understand why fans treasure it. There is no swagger in it at all. A 19-year-old truck driver sings about loving somebody exactly as they are—no conditions, no performance. He even speaks part of it rather than singing.
Then, decades later, something happened to it that nobody could have planned.
Lisa Marie Presley took her father’s original vocal and recorded her own voice alongside it. Her first duet with him had been “Don’t Cry Daddy” in 1997, for the twentieth anniversary of his death. She did it again with “In the Ghetto” in 2007. And she returned to it with “I Love You Because” — a father and a daughter singing a song about unconditional love, recorded roughly half a century apart.

She did the same with “Where No One Stands Alone” in 2018, for a gospel album. Gospel was the music Elvis loved most — the only genre that ever won him a Grammy, and all three of his Grammys came from it. That hymn is about feeling alone even when surrounded by people, which is about as close to a self-portrait as he ever got.
She was nine years old when she lost him. She died in January 2023, aged 54, and is buried a few feet from him at Graceland.
He never heard a single one of those duets. She made them anyway.
