In July 1996, Michael Jackson arrived in South Africa for the first time. He was already one of the most famous entertainers on Earth, but this visit quickly became about something much bigger than music. Michael attended celebrations for President Nelson Mandela’s 78th birthday and met the man whose fight against apartheid had made him a symbol of courage around the world.
That same day, Michael traveled to Soweto and laid a wreath at a memorial honoring young people killed during the 1976 uprising. Three years later, their relationship became much more public. On March 23, 1999, Michael stood beside Mandela in Cape Town and announced Michael Jackson & Friends, a pair of major benefit concerts designed to raise support for humanitarian causes around the world.

The concerts were held in Seoul on June 25 and Munich on June 27, 1999. Proceeds were intended to support organizations including the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, UNESCO and the Red Cross, with Michael bringing together major performers around a message centered on children, peace and people affected by conflict.
That makes the second video much more than another Michael and Mandela appearance. It shows what had happened to the relationship that began three years earlier. In 1996, Michael had arrived as a famous visitor paying his respects.
