Everybody assumes the Jackson story begins with Michael. It does not. It begins in a small house in Gary, Indiana, with a guitar that belonged to his father — and a brother who was banned from going anywhere near it.
Joe Jackson worked at a steel mill and played guitar in a struggling band called the Falcons. That guitar was his, and his children were told to leave it alone. Tito Jackson, the third son, could not help himself. Whenever his parents were out, he took it down and taught himself to play.

Joe Jackson was a famously severe father. Tito was expecting serious trouble. Instead, his father handed him the guitar and told him to prove it — show me what you can do.
Tito played. And he was good. Good enough that his father stopped being angry and started paying attention.
That is the moment the whole thing turns. Joe began watching his children properly, discovered that several of them could sing, and started running rehearsals at home. Out of that came a group of brothers who would become the Jackson 5 — and a small boy at the front who would become the most famous entertainer on earth.

Tito never got the headlines. He wasn’t the frontman, and he didn’t have the solo career Michael or Janet did. What he did instead was stay. He played guitar in that group for decades, kept the brothers touring long after the world had moved on, and remained one of the steadiest presences in a family that had very few.
After Michael died in 2009, Tito was among those who kept turning up to protect his brother’s legacy — still performing, still talking about him. Tito died in September 2024 at age 70.
Fans still talk about the night Michael first stunned an audience. Far fewer talk about the afternoon a boy picked up a guitar he was not allowed to touch and broke a string.
