When you think of Elvis Presley, you probably picture bright stage lights, screaming crowds, and gold records on the wall. A star that big must have left behind a huge family. Dozens of cousins and grandkids, all sharing the most famous last name in music.
The real story is much smaller. Today, the direct bloodline of the King of Rock and Roll rests on three granddaughters and two great-grandchildren. Not one of them was born with the last name Presley.
To understand the Presley family, you have to go all the way back to the very beginning.
Elvis was born on January 8, 1935, in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi. His parents, Vernon and Gladys, were expecting twins. The first baby, Jesse Garon, was born stillborn. Elvis arrived about thirty-five minutes later and became the couple’s only son.

That loss shaped everything. Gladys held her only son close and watched over him with fierce care. Once Elvis got famous in the mid 1950s, his first goal was simple. He wanted his parents out of poverty for good. In 1957, he bought Graceland so they would finally have a safe home.
Elvis had just one child, Lisa Marie Presley, born in 1968. According to Elvis’s ex-wife, Priscilla, Elvis actually chose not to have more children because his wild touring schedule kept him away too much. He didn’t want to be an absent father.
Elvis died young, so everything passed through her.
Lisa Marie had four children of her own. An older daughter, Riley. A son, Benjamin. Then twin girls, Harper and Finley.

Fans adored Benjamin the most because he looked so much like his grandfather, Elvis Presley. Many hoped he would carry the Presley name forward. Yet, behind that famous face was a young man under constant pressure. Out of that pressure and sadness, Benjamin passed away in July 2020 at just twenty-seven. The direct male line ended with him.
Elvis’s own daughter, Lisa Marie, died on January 12, 2023, at age 54. Her eldest daughter, Riley Keough, became the sole trustee of the estate, which includes Graceland.
The story does keep moving. In August 2022, Riley and her husband, Ben Smith Petersen, welcomed a daughter named Tupelo Storm. Tupelo is the town where Elvis was born. Storm was her uncle Benjamin’s middle name. A second baby quietly arrived in early 2025.
So the names on paper now read Keough, Lockwood, and Smith Petersen. The surname changed. The bloodline did not.
