In the fall of 1955, a Florida musician named Tommy Durden read a newspaper story he could not shake. A man had died, and before he did, he destroyed every card and every paper that could prove who he was. Police had almost nothing to work with. All he left behind was a single line. Durden carried that clipping to his writing partner, Mae Boren Axton, a 41-year-old high school English teacher who wrote songs on the side. She read it and felt the loneliness of a man so cut off that nobody knew his name. Then she said the line that made history. Let us put a Heartbreak Hotel at the end of that lonely street.

They finished it in about twenty minutes. Together they built a small, shadowy world where broken people go to cry, a place where the desk clerk is dressed in black. Then they played it for a local performer named Glen Reeves, hoping he would help. He heard the title and told them it was the silliest thing he had ever heard.
Axton had one huge advantage. She did part-time publicity for a manager named Colonel Tom Parker, and she had already promised his young client a hit. In November 1955, at a country music convention in Nashville, she played Elvis the demo. He loved it, chose it as his first RCA single, and took a share of the writing credit for a song he never wrote.

He cut it on January 10, 1956, in Nashville, backed by his own band plus guitarist Chet Atkins and pianist Floyd Cramer, drenched in echo so it sounded like an empty room. The record came out on January 27. One day later, Elvis made his national television debut. By April, it was his first number one and his first million seller.
One question hung over everything. Who was the man in the newspaper? Axton died in 1982 and Durden in 1999, and nobody ever found the article. Then in 2016, research reported by Rolling Stone pointed to Alvin Krolik, a heartbroken man shot dead while robbing a liquor store in El Paso. His death ran under the headline Story Of Person Who Walked Lonely Street.
