Singers vs Variety Acts: Who Will Take Over AGT Season 21?

America’s Got Talent was created as a stage where singers, magicians, dancers, comedians and unusual performers could compete against one another. Yet Season 21 is already starting to feel like a battle between two very different groups. Singers are collecting Golden Buzzers while variety acts are trying to prove that a big voice is not the only thing capable of winning America’s vote.

Lai Noelle, Luke Taleno and Lara D all received Golden Buzzers during the opening weeks. Then Army Sergeant Isaac Atkins stepped onto the stage with a rough and soulful version of “Beggin’.” Mel B was drawn to his voice before he had even started singing. When the performance ended, she pressed the Golden Buzzer before the other judges could finish sharing their thoughts.

Isaac’s audition showed why singers remain such a powerful force on AGT. Viewers can understand the act immediately, connect with a familiar song and focus on one person’s emotional journey. Isaac also had a story audiences could support. He took leave from the U.S. Army to follow his musical dream and walked away with a direct place in the live shows.

However, singers may not control the season as easily as those early Golden Buzzers suggest. Acro Canine Crew combined acrobatics with trained dogs while robot group Unitree delivered a futuristic stage spectacle. The biggest warning to the singers came when returning magician Yu Hojin introduced nine other performers and transformed his card magic into a massive group act called Hundred Fingers.

They did not depend on a famous song or an emotional speech. Cards appeared, vanished and changed color as ten magicians moved together with the timing of a dance group. Terry Crews tried to reach the Golden Buzzer, but Howie Mandel beat him to it by throwing himself across the judges’ table. Simon Cowell called the performance one of the best he had ever seen while Howie said the group deserved its own Las Vegas hotel.

Isaac Atkins has already earned his place in the live shows with a memorable voice, a powerful story and Mel B’s Golden Buzzer. Hundred Fingers has answered with scale, originality and the kind of polished spectacle built for a Las Vegas stage. Watch both auditions above and decide which side has the stronger path to the final. Will another singer take the AGT crown or is Season 21 finally ready to belong to the variety acts?
