Elvis’s granddaughter grew up with Graceland. It wasn’t the home she loved most.

Riley Keough is Elvis Presley’s granddaughter. Her mother was Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis’s only child, which puts Riley right at the center of one of the most famous families in music. Most people figure a girl like that grew up inside Graceland, the Memphis mansion where Elvis lived and where fans still line up every day to walk through the gates.

But when Riley talks about where she actually felt at home as a child, she doesn’t name Graceland at all.

In 1994, when Riley was about 5, her mother married Michael Jackson. For a few years the Presleys and the King of Pop were one family. Riley and her little brother Ben spent long stretches at Michael’s California ranch, Neverland, with its rides and animals and all that space to run around.

So she grew up around two of the most famous homes in America. Asked years later which one felt like home, she picked the one most people wouldn’t guess.

In a 2023 Vanity Fair cover story, reported by People that August, Riley said it plainly. “I spent more time at Neverland than Graceland, to be honest.” Then she gave her reason. “That was a real home, whereas Graceland was a museum in my lifetime.”

Graceland means sacred ground to most of the world. To a small child, though, it was somewhere strangers came to tour, not a place that felt lived in. Neverland, for those few years, was where her family actually was.

Riley has looked back on all of it with warmth. She’s said her childhood with Michael “felt very normal” to her, even though she knows how it must look from outside. “In hindsight, I can see how crazy these things would be to somebody from the outside,” she said.

She talked about those marriage years again in a sit-down with E! News. It’s a different interview from the magazine one, but it’s Riley herself remembering what that part of her life was like.

What comes through is how ordinary it all felt to her back then. Other kids had one house and a backyard. Riley had Graceland on one side of her family and Neverland on the other, and the one she remembers as home is the one with the Ferris wheel.

She’s an actress and director now, with a life mostly outside the spotlight her family lived under. People still ask her about Graceland and about Elvis. But the house she remembers loving was the one with the rides out back.
