On 26 May 1994, Michael Jackson married Lisa Marie Presley in the Dominican Republic. The world reacted with flat disbelief — two of the most famous surnames in music history, joined together apparently overnight, and almost everybody assumed it was a stunt. What almost nobody knew at the time is that one of the most important people in Lisa Marie’s life had already told her not to do it—her mother.
Priscilla Presley has been open about it since. She has said directly that she was not in favor of the marriage, and she raised it with her daughter before it happened. Lisa Marie later recalled her mother questioning the timing of the whole thing and pushing her to consider whether the relationship was serving Michael’s public image rather than serving her. In her 2025 memoir, Priscilla went considerably further, writing that she believed Michael was benefiting from being attached to Elvis Presley’s daughter.
So Michael Jackson went ahead and married a woman knowing that her mother thought he was using her.

And he did not stay quiet about the accusation. He answered it in public, twice, in front of enormous audiences.
The first was at the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards, when he walked out with Lisa Marie in front of the entire music industry and a global television audience, and delivered a line straight at the skeptics before kissing her: “Just think, nobody thought this would last.” He was not pretending the doubt did not exist. He was naming it.
The second was in June 1995, when the two of them sat down with Diane Sawyer for a live television interview. Sawyer put the theory to them directly — that the marriage was a publicity arrangement rather than a real relationship. Michael’s response was three words: “Like we’re faking this?”

He also cleared up who had started it. In that same interview, Michael confirmed that he was the one who first raised the idea of marriage, not her. Lisa Marie’s own account, written years later in her memoir, matches. She said she initially thought he was simply lonely and in need of a friend — “But he was pursuing me.” Then, in 1994, he said it outright to her: he was completely in love with her and wanted to marry her. Her reaction was “I’m really flattered, I can’t even talk.”
Her own answer to the publicity accusation, given in that same televised interview, has become the most quoted moment of the whole broadcast. Asked whether the marriage was physically real, she snapped back: “Yes! Yes! Yes!” And on the theory that she had married him for other motives entirely, she said: “I’m not going to marry anyone for any reason other than the fact that I’ve fallen in love with them. And they can eat it if they want to think anything different.”

The marriage did not survive. They separated in December 1995 and divorced the following year, and her publicist announced they remained good friends.
It is worth being clear about one thing, because it gets misreported. There is no known quote of Michael responding directly to Priscilla or attacking her. He never did that. What he defended was the marriage itself — in front of the world, on the record, more than once, while the woman closest to his wife was telling her it was a mistake.
