Prince Brings Back the Funk with “Musicology”

Rob Sheffield

There is something exciting about watching a legend show everyone why he is still the best. In 2004, Prince went on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and performed “Musicology.” It was more than a show. It was like a fun music lesson. He smiled, played his guitar, and the crowd came alive right away.

What made it even better was the way he carried himself. That small, knowing smile on his face said everything, he knew exactly how good the groove was, and he wanted the crowd to enjoy it too. It did not feel like he was showing off. It felt like he was sharing something special. His joy spread through the room, pulling everyone into the rhythm with him.

On this day in 2004, Prince performed “Musicology” on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

People watching at home loved it. One person said it felt like “a lesson and a party at the same time.” Another said it was “a history book set to rhythm.” Fans could not stop talking about how he made hard music sound so easy. His smile said it all, like he was sharing a fun secret with everyone.

A few days later, Prince kept that same spark going. He performed his hit song “Cream” at Webster Hall in New York City. It felt like the next step in the story. After showing his love for old-school funk, he showed off his own cool style. It was the same Prince, but now full of swagger and confidence.

Prince – “Cream” (Live at Webster Hall – April 20, 2004)

At Webster Hall, Prince owned the stage. “Cream” was full of power and fun. The crowd clapped, cheered, and danced along as he sang and moved with total ease. Every note showed confidence. Every grin pulled people closer. It proved that great music and real funk never go out of style.
