The first Michael movie took audiences from Michael Jackson’s childhood with the Jackson 5 through his rise into one of the biggest stars in music, eventually ending during the Bad era. But a major part of his later life never appeared. Now Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew who portrayed him in the film, says the sequel could finally enter that difficult territory.
Speaking to GQ Middle East, Jaafar said he believes a second film will offer more of Michael’s perspective on the child sexual abuse allegations made against him. He argued that the accusations have usually been told through other people’s accounts and said his family believes Michael’s own voice has often been missing from discussions of his later years.
Lionsgate Confirms a Michael Jackson Biopic Sequel Is in Development
The sequel is no longer just something hinted at by the first movie’s ending. Lionsgate chairman Adam Fogelson has confirmed that the studio is actively developing another Michael film, with the creative team working on how to continue Jackson’s story beyond 1988. That makes Jaafar Jackson’s latest comments especially important because he is now revealing what he hopes that next chapter will confront.
Those allegations were originally supposed to appear in the first movie. Variety reported that an earlier version devoted much of its third act to the 1993 accusations. After filming, the production encountered legal restrictions connected to an earlier settlement, forcing that material to be removed and the ending to be reworked.
The expensive overhaul pushed the story back to Michael’s Bad era, leaving several decades untouched. That creates an obvious path for the sequel, including Dangerous, Neverland and the controversies that followed. Lionsgate has been discussing production beginning in late 2026 or early 2027.
Jaafar has been careful to say he does not control what goes into the screenplay. Still, his latest comments are significant because he specifically believes a second movie can provide more of Michael’s perspective on the allegations. Exactly how the filmmakers handle that material remains one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding Michael 2.
