Michael Jackson’s live shows were rehearsed to the second. Every light, every step, every camera angle was planned weeks in advance, and he was famous for demanding that it be executed exactly as designed. So he knew precisely what would happen every single night. He knew which songs came next. He knew where every dancer would be standing. And he knew exactly what his duet partner would look like when she walked out to sing with him.
Then one night on the Dangerous World Tour, she walked out in a blonde wig, and the whole show fell apart.
The singer was Siedah Garrett — and she was not a random backing vocalist. She is the only woman other than his own sister ever to record a duet with Michael Jackson. She co-wrote “Man in the Mirror.” And every night on that tour she came out to perform “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” with him, the ballad they had recorded together for the Bad album.

The problem was that doing the identical thing every night gets boring, even when the thing you are doing is singing to eighty thousand people. Siedah has explained it plainly: for the band members, “we would grow a little weary of doing the exact same thing every night.”
So she decided to shake him up. In her own words: “During one show on our Dangerous World Tour, I decided to surprise Michael by appearing on-stage wearing a blond wig to sing our duet.” She did not warn him. She did not clear it with anybody. She walked out in the wig.
Her description of his reaction is perfect: “Michael was initially taken aback, but then was amused, and couldn’t stop laughing on stage.”

And it did not stop at the duet. Fans who have watched footage from that night say he was still laughing about it later in the show. He had to keep performing, in front of a stadium, while his mind kept going back to what she had done.
It was payback, in a sense, because he had started it. Siedah has told a story from the recording studio that explains their whole dynamic. While they were cutting “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” Michael recorded his part perfectly. Then, when it came time for her to sing her verses, he started throwing popcorn in her face to make her mess up. Producer Quincy Jones, who could not see what was happening, began telling her off for fluffing the takes. Meanwhile, in her words, Michael was “just CRACKING UP.”
That is the man his own collaborators describe. Asked whether Michael ever did anything that shocked her, Siedah answered: “Yes! Every night!” — and then immediately added that she did things to surprise him too.
She has said the two of them had a genuine chemistry on that stage and that his fans could see it. And she credits him with the rest of her career: “MJ taught me everything that I know about performing.”
The most controlled performer in the world, thrown completely off script by a wig. And he loved it.
