Matt Fiddes, who worked security around Jackson, has said publicly that when Michael’s health declined and his problems became harder to hide, many people he expected to hear from simply weren’t there. Then, after he died, they reappeared.

The first was Whitney Houston. Their connection went back further than most people realize — Whitney’s mother, Cissy Houston, was a professional backing singer who had performed with Elvis Presley. Whitney grew up inside the music business. She and Michael had known each other for years, and she publicly idolized him.
Her reaction to his death was raw and unguarded, and worth watching. She said she was devastated and spoke about him not as a superstar, but as someone she had genuinely loved.
She died herself less than three years later, in 2012.
