In early 1977, an 18-year-old Michael Jackson raised his fists on live television and started throwing quick, silly punches at Muhammad Ali.
The world’s top boxing hero ducked, dodged, and laughed right back. Most people know this famous video clip today as a funny TV joke. But that playful moment was actually just one tiny piece of a real, lifelong friendship between two of the biggest superstars ever to live.

Long before that TV appearance, the two stars were already close. A 12-year-old Michael first met Ali at a benefit event in 1971. By 1975, Ali was stopping by the Jackson house in California to hang out. He sat in the kitchen with Michael’s mother, Katherine, and acted like a big, funny uncle in the living room. Ali’s own daughter, Hana, later remembered coming home as a child to find Michael Jackson sitting casually on their couch.
Their bond went far beyond what normal celebrity photos capture. Two months after their famous TV fight, Michael and his brothers visited Ali’s private boxing camp in Pennsylvania.
They put on huge gloves, goofed around in the real training ring, and took a classic photo where Michael stood on Ali’s chest as if the skinny teenager had knocked out the champ. Later in life, when Michael visited Ali’s house, Ali asked Michael to sit at the piano and sing his favorite song, “I’ll Be There.” Michael happily did it with no audience or lights around them.

That bold self-belief inspired Michael to push his own music performance to historic levels.
When Michael faced hard times later in life, he still looked up to Ali as a symbol of strength and bravery.
