Some childhood memories fade. Others get packed away in a cardboard box and wait for the right day to come back out.
That’s what happened to Marielle Tourel.
Marielle is Polish and French. When she was a little girl, she had a front-row seat to one of the biggest tours in the world, because her father was a close friend of Michael Jackson’s. He traveled with Michael on the HIStory World Tour through Europe, South America and Asia. Marielle’s family even stayed in the same hotels as Michael in Paris and at Disneyland.
On Sept. 20, 1996, Michael’s plane landed in Warsaw, Poland. Marielle was there to greet him.
Years later, she told the Polish TV news channel TVN24 what that day felt like. As MJVibe quotes her in English, “Everyone waited for his arrival… Older women were crying, kids going wild…”
This old clip about the Jackson mania in Poland gives you a feel for the excitement that little girl was standing in the middle of.

That same day, Michael played a huge show at Bemowo airfield in Warsaw for 120,000 people. The HIStory tour had only kicked off about two weeks earlier, in Prague, on Sept. 7.
Marielle got to see a side of Michael that the crowds never did. And what she remembers most isn’t the fame.
“With him I felt he was my friend. He was a normal person with a beautiful soul…” she said, as quoted by MJVibe. She added, “Despite his popularity, Michael never looked at people with superiority.”
Marielle also got to join Michael on stage. For a little girl, that was about as big as it gets.
Now for the moment she’s proudest of. During “Heal the World,” groups of children would come up on stage with Michael. They’d sing their part, and then they’d head back off.
Except for one little girl.
“Whenever a group of children came on stage… the rest of the kids left, but I stayed the whole song…” she remembered.
She stayed right there for the whole thing, from the first note to the last. And it clearly meant something to her. “I felt part of his mission,” she said.
If you’d like to see what Michael’s Warsaw show looked like that night at Bemowo, this recording from Sept. 20, 1996, will take you right back to the airfield.

So where did all of this come from, after so many years?
Last year, Marielle was getting ready to open a children’s pop-up store called Kidiland. While she was sorting through old family boxes, she came across something she hadn’t seen in a very long time: photos of herself with Michael.
She shared her surprise online. “I found these finds in the cardboard boxes today!” she wrote.
Those photos brought the whole story back, from the day his plane landed in Warsaw to the song she stayed on stage for.
Most of us have a box like that somewhere, full of pictures we forgot we had. Marielle’s just happened to have the King of Pop in it.
