Every October, as Halloween gets close, one song creeps back onto the radio and into every party playlist: Thriller. More than forty years after it came out, Michael Jackson’s monster masterpiece is still the sound of the season, the red leather jacket, the foggy graveyard, the dance only he could have dreamed up.
What most fans do not realize is that the man who made it was deeply torn about the whole thing.
In the early 1980s, Michael was a devoted Jehovah’s Witness. His faith was a huge part of his life, and it held strict views about the supernatural. So when he agreed to star in a short film full of werewolves, zombies clawing out of their graves and dark occult imagery, it put him on a collision course with his own church.
The elders were not happy. As word spread about what the video contained, Michael came under serious pressure from his religious community, who saw the monster theme as a betrayal of what they believed. The conflict weighed on him. This was not just a fun video to him. It was a real crisis of conscience.
In the end he found a way to make peace with it, at least on paper. He insisted the video open with a written message making his position clear, a line stressing that the film in no way endorsed a belief in the occult. It is still there at the start today, a small window into how conflicted the biggest pop star on earth felt about his own greatest work. A few years later, in 1987, he parted ways with the Jehovah’s Witnesses altogether.
Knowing all of that, the video hits a little differently. This is the one that put Michael at war with his own faith:

Watch it again with fresh eyes. Every frame that made it a Halloween classic, the transformation, the graveyard, the army of dancing dead, is the same imagery his church begged him to walk away from. He gave the world its favorite spooky tradition while quietly wrestling with whether he should have made it at all.
That is what makes October such a fitting month for Michael. His music runs deeper than the fun on the surface. Even his most playful, theatrical moment came from a real and complicated human being.
So this Halloween season, when Thriller comes on, remember what it cost him. Press play and enjoy the masterpiece he made in spite of everything pulling him the other way.
