By 1988, Michael Jackson had reached a level of fame that made ordinary privacy almost impossible. He had already released Thriller and Bad when he acquired a huge ranch in California’s Santa Ynez Valley. Later accounts commonly place the purchase at $19.5 million, although contemporary reporting gave a higher figure. The property stretched across roughly 2,700 acres and offered something Michael could rarely find elsewhere: space.
The estate was originally known as Sycamore Valley Ranch. Michael renamed it Neverland Valley Ranch, inspired by the magical island from Peter Pan. But changing the name was only the beginning. Over the following years, he poured an estimated $35 million into improvements, transforming a secluded country estate into something almost impossible to compare with another celebrity home.

Neverland eventually contained its own amusement park with a Ferris wheel, carousel, bumper cars, roller coaster and other rides. There was also a private zoo, arcade, movie theater and railway system. One locomotive was named Katherine after Michael’s mother, while an elaborate train station helped give the property the appearance of a fantasy park rather than a private residence.
And maintaining that fantasy was enormously expensive. Forbes reported that at its peak in the early 1990s, Neverland was costing Michael more than $10 million every year to operate. The rides, animals, landscaping and large staff meant the property functioned almost like a private resort rather than a normal home.

The second video shows Neverland during one of the periods when the public was finally allowed inside. In February 1993, Michael invited Oprah Winfrey to the ranch for his first major television interview in years. Viewers saw parts of the amusement park and grounds while Michael explained some of the thinking behind the world he had created. The broadcast reportedly reached around 90 million viewers worldwide.
Neverland also became the setting for major moments in Michael’s personal life. Elizabeth Taylor married Larry Fortensky there in 1991, and Michael later hosted charitable events involving children at the property. For years, Neverland became almost as closely connected to Michael Jackson’s public image as the Moonwalk or the red Thriller jacket.

But Neverland showed how far his imagination extended beyond music. He took thousands of acres of California countryside and spent tens of millions creating the private world he wanted around him.
