In August 1994 Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley travelled to Budapest Hungary where Michael was filming promotional footage for his HIStory project. During the visit they toured Bethesda Children’s Hospital and met several young patients.
One child immediately caught Michael’s attention. His name was Béla Farkas, a four-year-old boy suffering from a serious congenital liver condition. His health was deteriorating and doctors said that a liver transplant offered his best chance of survival. The operation and treatment abroad would be extremely expensive.

After learning what Béla needed Michael announced that he would cover the child’s medical expenses. This was more than a vague promise made during a photographed hospital visit. Michael’s charitable organization became involved and Béla eventually received the transplant he desperately needed. The operation was successful.
Two years later Michael returned to Budapest during preparations for his HIStory World Tour. He had not forgotten the sick little boy he had met in the hospital. Béla was now healthier and Michael arranged to see him again. Photographs captured Michael holding his hand and smiling beside the child whose future had once looked frighteningly uncertain. Contemporary news footage reported that Béla was doing well following the transplant Michael had helped finance.

Béla later said Michael continued helping with his treatment and stayed in contact through cards, gifts and photographs. When Béla became an adult and welcomed a child of his own he reflected on the stranger who had changed the course of his life after one hospital meeting. He reportedly wished he could ask Michael one question: “Of all the children in that hospital why did you choose me?”
Millions saw Michael Jackson filling stadiums. Béla Farkas knew another side of him: the visitor who noticed one frightened little boy asked what was wrong and refused to walk away after hearing the answer.
Michael Jackson remains one of the most celebrated performers in history. His record-breaking albums Thriller Bad and Dangerous redefined popular music.
