Hundreds of Michael Jackson fans were gathered outside Munich’s Bayerischer Hof Hotel in March 1998 when Michael suddenly appeared at the window of his suite.
But this time, he was carrying a message.
Photographs from March 25, 1998 show Michael holding up a handmade banner containing three words:
“STOP FILTHY PRESS.”
It was a striking public response from someone who had spent years complaining about sensational stories written about his private life.
Michael was staying at the Bayerischer Hof for an extended visit to Munich. The hotel’s own history says he returned several times over the years and spent about three weeks there in March 1998.
Fans quickly discovered where he was staying.
Crowds regularly waited on the Promenadeplatz below, hoping Michael would appear at one of the windows.
And he often did.
The Bayerischer Hof later remembered fans waiting by the hundreds just for a glimpse of him. That connection became so strong that after Michael’s death in 2009, fans created an unofficial memorial directly outside the hotel.

The “STOP FILTHY PRESS” message was not an isolated opinion.
By the 1990s, Michael had repeatedly attacked tabloid culture in his music and interviews. His 1995 album HIStory included “Tabloid Junkie,” a song built around his frustration with sensational reporting and the way rumors could be repeated until audiences accepted them as fact.
That made the Munich banner unusually direct.
Instead of answering another interview question or issuing a statement through representatives, Michael simply stood at his hotel window where hundreds of supporters could see him and displayed exactly what he wanted to say.
The moment became one of the images fans continued associating with his visits to Munich.
Michael returned to the Bayerischer Hof again in later years, and crowds continued gathering outside whenever word spread that he was there. The hotel eventually became so closely connected with him that the nearby Orlando di Lasso monument developed into a lasting Michael Jackson fan memorial.
But the 1998 photograph remains especially memorable.
Michael Jackson did not need a microphone or a stage.
He opened his hotel window, faced the crowd below and let three handwritten words speak for him: “STOP FILTHY PRESS.”
