Did You Know? The Night Michael and Janet Jackson Screamed Back at the World

Imagine being the most famous man on the planet, but feeling completely alone. It is the mid-1990s. The industry is attacking Michael Jackson from every single angle. The media pressure is incredibly heavy. He needs a way to fight back against the cruel rumors. But he decides he will not do it alone. He picks up the phone. He calls his little sister.

Janet Jackson was already a massive superstar on her own. She ruled the charts. But to Michael, she was just family.

They had not recorded a major song together since they were young kids. But when her big brother needed her, Janet did not hesitate. They decided to join forces and get back together for one massive, explosive hit. They walked into the studio and poured all of their frustration into a track called “Scream.”

They made absolute history. They teamed up with director Mark Romanek and filmed the most expensive music video ever made at the time. It was loud, aggressive, and totally brilliant. The video showed the two siblings escaping gravity in a spaceship, dancing wildly, and fighting back against the noise of the world. They were a fiercely united team again. The public could not look away.

Fast forward to February 28, 1996. The biggest names in music gathered at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

It was the night of the 38th Annual Grammy Awards. When the envelope was opened for Best Short Form Music Video, the ultimate sibling duo won the golden trophy. They took home the biggest prize in music, side-by-side.
