One night in Las Vegas in 2007, Michael Jackson was riding in a car with his bodyguards when something outside caught his attention.
A homeless man and woman were beside the road.
According to former bodyguards Bill Whitfield and Javon Beard, Michael asked why they were standing there. After being told they were homeless, he seemed surprised and asked why nobody was helping them.
Then Michael told Beard to pull over.
He watched from inside the vehicle before asking the woman to come toward his window.
Michael opened his bag, pulled out three $100 bills and handed her $300.
She thanked him as the car began moving again.
But almost immediately, Michael noticed something happening behind them.
The man who had been sitting near the woman reportedly tried to take the money from her.
Michael told Beard to stop again.
Instead of demanding the first $300 back or confronting the man, Michael called him over and gave him another $300 of his own.

Whitfield and Beard said Michael then gave the pair some simple instructions.
He wanted them to buy proper food and warned them not to spend the money on drugs.
But the encounter apparently stayed on Michael’s mind.
As they drove away, he began asking his guards whether there were many other homeless people living around Las Vegas.
When they told him there were areas where homelessness was much more visible, Michael wanted to see them himself.
His guards were hesitant to take one of the most recognizable entertainers in the world into those areas, especially at night.
Michael did not forget.
According to their account, they eventually drove him through an area where many homeless people were living.
This time Michael came prepared with cash.
He remained inside the car, cracked the window and began handing out $100 bills to people who approached. Beard and Whitfield remembered Michael paying particular attention to women in the crowd because he wanted to make sure they received money directly.
Eventually, he ran out.
Rather than being relieved that the unusual trip was finished, Michael reportedly became disappointed that he had not brought more.
His bodyguards said the experience also led to other acts.
At times, Michael would tell them that leftover food he and his children were not going to eat should be taken to homeless people instead of being thrown away. On one occasion, the children reportedly went along so they could see the situation themselves.
The story was later included in Whitfield and Beard’s book Remember the Time: Protecting Michael Jackson in His Final Days, which documented their experiences working closely with Michael during the final years of his life. The book’s official site describes it as their firsthand account of the man they knew privately.
Michael Jackson spent much of his life behind gates, security teams and darkened car windows.
But according to the men protecting him that night, seeing two strangers struggling beside a Las Vegas road was enough to make him stop.
