For years, the story got told the same cruel way. Michael Jackson got bored of his pet chimp Bubbles, the tale went, and simply dumped him once the fame faded. It’s a sad story. It’s also just not true.
Here’s what actually happened. Bubbles is still alive. He’s around 43 now, living at a sanctuary called the Center for Great Apes in Florida, where he spends his days painting and lounging with other chimpanzees. And Michael’s estate still quietly pays for his care, reportedly more than thirty thousand dollars a year.

So why did Michael send him there at all? Because baby chimps grow up. A fully grown chimpanzee can weigh well over a hundred pounds and is many times stronger than a grown man. Keeping one in a house stops being cute and turns genuinely dangerous, for the animal most of all.
Michael knew that. And rather than cling to Bubbles out of his own loneliness, he did the harder, kinder thing. He found him the best sanctuary he could, so Bubbles could live out his life surrounded by his own kind, climbing and painting and finally being an actual chimp.

Which brings up a word of warning. Lately, fake AI-generated photos have been spreading online claiming Michael’s nephew Jaafar recently went and visited Bubbles. The sanctuary has flatly debunked them, counting a dozen different fakes, and says no such visit ever happened. So if those images pop up in your feed, know they aren’t real.
A real Jackson family reunion with Bubbles
The real story is so much gentler than the myth. This was a man who loved his friend enough to send him somewhere better for him, and who kept paying for his care long after. Bubbles is old and happy these days, still painting away. The headlines just never seemed interested in that version.
