They met when she was just 13 years old. Brooke Shields was already a huge star, Michael Jackson was Michael Jackson, and the two of them simply clicked. She once called it “the most natural and easiest of friendships.”
Over the years people saw them together at big events and guessed all sorts of things. Most folks only ever knew them as famous friends who turned up on the red carpet arm in arm.
What most people didn’t know is that Michael asked her to marry him. And not just once.
He wanted a real life with her. He even talked about the two of them adopting a child together someday. This mattered to him.

This is Brooke speaking at Michael’s memorial in July 2009. You can hear in her voice how much he meant to her, and she tells the tender side of their friendship better than anyone else could.
Years later, in 2014, she put the romance part plainly. “Of course we loved each other, but nothing happened romantically,” she said. She also remembered a ring he once gave her, and the sweet thing he told her when he handed it over. “It sparkles and you sparkle,” he said.
But the proposals were the part that showed how much he trusted her. She never said yes. She also never walked away or made him feel foolish for asking.
Here’s the answer she reportedly gave, as she told Rolling Stone back in 2009. “You have me for the rest of your life, you don’t need to marry me,” she said. “I’m going to go on and do my own life and have my own marriage and my own kids, and you’ll always have me.”
And then the line that says everything about the two of them. “I think it made him relax.”
That was the whole point. She wasn’t really turning him down. She was promising him something steadier than a wedding. He didn’t need a ring to keep her in his corner.
They stayed close right up until he was gone. When it was finally time to say goodbye, she was one of the voices the whole world stopped to hear.
