On September 28, 1996, Michael Jackson walked into one of Europe’s newest stadiums and began an extraordinary three-show run.
The Amsterdam ArenA had officially opened only six weeks earlier, on August 14, 1996. By the end of Michael’s visit, roughly 150,000 people had packed into the new venue across three HIStory World Tour concerts.
The shows took place on September 28, September 30 and October 2, 1996, with attendance commonly listed at around 50,000 per night.
For Dutch fans, it meant five days dominated by Michael Jackson.
And this was not a small production.
The HIStory World Tour opened with one of Michael’s most dramatic stage entrances, bringing him onto the stage in his futuristic gold-and-silver costume before launching into “Scream,” “They Don’t Care About Us” and “In the Closet.”

The setlist stretched across nearly every major era of Michael’s career.
Fans heard “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’,” “Smooth Criminal,” “Billie Jean,” “Thriller,” “Beat It,” “Dangerous,” “Black or White” and “Earth Song.”
Michael also looked back to the Jackson 5 years with a medley featuring “I Want You Back,” “The Love You Save” and “I’ll Be There,” before eventually closing the concert with “HIStory.”
The location itself made the concerts especially memorable.
The Amsterdam ArenA was still almost brand new. Queen Beatrix had officially opened it on August 14, making Michael one of the first major international music superstars to bring a stadium-scale production into the venue. The stadium would later be renamed the Johan Cruijff ArenA in 2018.
And Michael was not finished with Amsterdam.
The demand was strong enough that the HIStory Tour returned to the same stadium for another two concerts in June 1997, helping explain why some tour statistics list around 250,000 attendees for Amsterdam when all five performances are combined.
But it all began on September 28.
Three concerts. Roughly 150,000 fans. Five days. And a brand-new Amsterdam stadium suddenly belonged to Michael Jackson.
