Michael Jackson’s Wildest 9/11 Story Puts Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando in One Car

Picture three of the most famous faces on Earth squeezed into one rental car, rolling west on an American highway. One of them keeps asking to pull over for fried chicken.

That’s the story people have told for years about Michael Jackson, movie star Elizabeth Taylor and acting giant Marlon Brando in the days after September 11, 2001.

And the setup is real.

That September, Michael played two huge shows at Madison Square Garden in New York to celebrate 30 years as a solo artist. The first was on September 7 and the second on September 10, the night before the attacks.

His famous friends showed up. Elizabeth Taylor, the Hollywood actress who’d been one of his closest friends for years, introduced his brothers on stage for a Jackson 5 reunion.

Brando, the star of The Godfather, came out to give a speech at the first show. It didn’t go well. ABC News reported that the crowd booed him.

You can see the strange moment for yourself.

Hours after the second show, the Twin Towers fell. All three stars were reportedly still in Manhattan, and flights across the country were grounded.

This is where the legend starts.

In 2011, writer Sam Kashner published a Vanity Fair story about Taylor’s final years. In it, a former Jackson employee who wasn’t named claimed Michael got his group out to New Jersey first. Then the three stars rented a car and drove off together.

“They actually got as far as Ohio,” the employee said, adding that they drove themselves.

According to that same account, Brando insisted on stopping at nearly every KFC and Burger King along the way.

But the story has holes. In the same article, a close friend and assistant of Taylor said she never left New York at all. That person said she prayed at a church, visited people waiting for news at an armory and went to Ground Zero before flying home later.

Jackson biographer Stacy Brown later gave yet another version. Brown said Michael left New York two days after the attacks with his kids, not with Taylor or Brando, and that Brando wouldn’t come out of his room.

All three have since died, so nobody can settle it now. This deep dive puts every version side by side.

Did Michael Jackson’s 9/11 Road Trip Actually Happen?

The tale got so famous that a British TV channel made a comedy about it in 2017, with Joseph Fiennes as Michael. It never aired. Michael’s daughter Paris spoke out against the casting, and the episode was pulled.

What Michael did next is easier to check.

He went back to a song he’d been working on for years and reworked it for the families who lost someone that day. On October 21, 2001, he and a stage full of stars closed a benefit concert in Washington, D.C., with it.

He called it “What More Can I Give.”
