Back in 1980, Michael Jackson was 21 and on top of the world. “Off the Wall” had come out just a few months earlier, and everyone wanted time with him. A British writer named John Pidgeon landed the kind of interview most reporters only dream about. He got to sit in a room with Michael.
Then things got unusual.
Pidgeon wasn’t allowed to speak to Michael directly. Any question he had, he was told to say out loud to one other person sitting in the room. That person would turn and repeat it to Michael, word for word. And Pidgeon wasn’t even the only reporter asked to do it this way.
So who was this go-between? Who did a grown journalist have to talk through just to reach one of the most famous young men alive?
The answer is warmer than you might guess.
In 2014, PBS dug up the old tape from that 1980 session and turned it into a short animated film for their series “Blank on Blank.” Watching it feels like pulling up a chair in that room. You hear the real young Michael, quiet and a little shy, talking about the music he loved.
The animated short built from the real 1980 interview tape
In it, Michael talks about being a perfectionist who wanted everything just right. He mentions how people kept calling his new sound “disco,” a label that didn’t sit well with him. He even shares that he recorded his early hit “Ben” in a single take. When he’s asked to sum up his own singing, he keeps it short and calls it “godly,” proud of the gift he felt he’d been given.
What gets you is how gentle he sounds. This was the man about to become the biggest entertainer on earth. But here, in a quiet room, he’s still a soft-spoken kid who feels safest with family nearby.
And family turns out to be the whole secret. The person Pidgeon had to speak through wasn’t a manager or a bodyguard. It was Michael’s little sister, who was just 13 at the time and would grow into a giant star in her own right. Her name was Janet.
If you’d like to hear more of Michael’s actual voice from that day, there’s a longer cut of the interview audio to sit with too.

Have a listen and let it sink in. The young man the whole press wanted to talk to could barely open up to a stranger unless his kid sister was right there beside him.
That one small detail tells you plenty about who Michael really was once the lights went down.
