The sound of Louis Armstrong’s trumpet is like sunlight breaking through clouds. On July 4, 2025, WKCR-FM in New York City played his music for a full 24 hours to celebrate the man who helped create jazz as we know it. From midnight to midnight, the radio was filled with his songs from his early Hot Five recordings to the warm, happy notes of Hello, Dolly. Every song reminded listeners why his music is still so special today.
This event, known as the Louis Armstrong Birthday Broadcast, is a significant tradition. Although Armstrong was actually born on August 4, 1901, he always believed his birthday was on July 4. That belief, along with his famous saying “Jazz and I get born together,” makes celebrating him on Independence Day feel just right. His music is both fun and powerful, filled with freedom and joy.
Happy July! This month, we have a wealth of excellent programming ahead. We start out with the first leg of our Louis Armstrong Birthday Broadcast with 24 hours of his music on the 4th of July (the second leg is August 4th demarcating his actual birthday as opposed to the day he thought it was, July 4th).
The day-long program also shared Armstrong’s story, from growing up in New Orleans to becoming famous all over the world. His way of playing the trumpet and singing was so new and exciting that it changed music forever. WKCR’s special broadcast gave fans a chance to hear how his style evolved and why it influenced so many great singers, including Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald.
That same feeling of hope and happiness shines in his song What a Wonderful World. The tune is simple but filled with meaning, and Armstrong’s warm, raspy voice makes every line feel like a gift. “I see trees of green, red roses too…” he sings, painting a picture of kindness and beauty in the world.

The blue skies, the smiles of people and the sound of children laughing all feel brighter when he sings them. It is like Armstrong is gently reminding us that even when life is hard, there is always something beautiful to notice.
