The London 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremony was full of music, history, and amazing performances. But one moment really stood out. It was quiet, powerful, and made everyone stop and feel something deeper.
Two choirs—The Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Choir and the Liverpool Signing Choir—came together to perform John Lennon’s famous song, “Imagine.” As they started singing, the lights dimmed, and suddenly, a video of John Lennon himself appeared on the big screen. It felt like he was right there with them.

This wasn’t the only time “Imagine” was performed at the Olympics. The song was also featured at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony. Yoko Ono, John Lennon’s wife and co-writer of the song, inspired much of its message about peace and unity.
In Tokyo, a choir sang “Imagine” alongside traditional Japanese instruments. The performance then included singers from all over the world, such as Angélique Kidjo from Africa, Alejandro Sanz from Europe, John Legend from America, and Keith Urban. Their voices came together to show that the song’s message of hope connects people everywhere, no matter where they’re from.

The Olympics is about more than just sports—it’s also about bringing people together and celebrating different cultures. John Lennon’s “Imagine” is the perfect song for this because it talks about peace, unity, and hope for a better world. Even though it was written in 1971, the song still inspires people today. Performances like these remind us how music can unite everyone, no matter where they’re from.
