To everybody else, he was the King of Rock and Roll. To Lisa Marie Presley, he was just her father — the man who came into her room to deal with a rat, took her to his shows, led her out onto the stage by the hand, and made her feel like the center of the world.
She had him for nine years.
When Elvis died in August 1977, she was too young to understand what his absence would actually mean. She would spend the rest of her life finding out. Graceland, his music, and the memories of their time together became part of who she was — and no matter how loudly the world talked about Elvis the legend, she kept remembering Elvis the dad.

Then she found a way to sing with him.
Lisa Marie grew up to become a singer herself, and she recorded a series of duets with her father—taking his original vocals and adding her own voice alongside them, so they sound like they are in the room together.
The most emotional of them came in 2007, for the 30th anniversary of his death. She chose “In the Ghetto” — the 1969 song about a child born into poverty in Chicago, which Elvis recorded when everybody around him told him not to because it carried a message.
She spent roughly two hours in the studio. And when it was finished, she broke down in tears. She described it as one of the most special moments of her life.

She gave the proceeds away to a charity, including Presley Place — a housing project that gives homeless families somewhere to live while they rebuild their lives. It was a fitting choice for a song about exactly that kind of poverty.
She was clear about who it was all for. “It’s all for the fans,” she said.
Lisa Marie died in January 2023 at age 54. She is buried in the Meditation Garden at Graceland, a few feet from him.
He never heard that duet. She made it anyway.
