When Lisa Marie Presley married Michael Jackson on May 26, 1994, she insisted it was real.
After confirming the secret marriage that August, Lisa said she was “very much in love with Michael” and wanted to build a happy life and family with him.
Years later, Lisa still said she had genuinely fallen in love with him.
But she also admitted that something changed.
Michael had been facing enormous public scrutiny when their relationship became serious. Lisa told Rolling Stone that she initially became fiercely protective of him and believed his side of the story. She imagined she could help him through the chaos surrounding his life.
Then she began noticing things that bothered her.
Their famous kiss at the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards, for example, was not Lisa’s idea. She later said it came from Michael’s management and made her feel as though she had suddenly become part of a “PR machine.”

During that June 1995 interview, Lisa publicly defended both Michael and their marriage. The couple discussed their relationship, the intense publicity surrounding them and even pushed back against claims that the marriage was merely for show.
Privately, however, their relationship was already becoming more complicated.
Lisa later recalled that Michael could disappear for long stretches. Before the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards, she said she had gone roughly six weeks without seeing or hearing from him. Then members of his team began calling because they wanted her at the ceremony.
Lisa attended, but later remembered thinking: “I just felt like I was being used at that point.”
By 2003, she was looking at the entire marriage differently.
When Playboy asked directly whether she believed Michael had used her, Lisa stopped short of making that accusation as a fact. She answered that she was not going to say whether he did or didn’t, but admitted that certain things looked troubling in hindsight. She said that after the Diane Sawyer interview, she began asking far more questions and the relationship deteriorated quickly.
That distinction matters.
Lisa never said her own love had been fake. In fact, she repeatedly said the opposite. What changed was her confidence that Michael’s motives had always been the same as hers.
She filed for divorce in January 1996, less than two years after their wedding.
Lisa Marie never denied that she loved Michael Jackson. What haunted her afterward was the question of whether she had understood why Michael wanted the marriage as clearly as she thought she did.
