Elvis Presley was the biggest star on the planet. To the rest of the world he was the King of Rock n’ Roll, the man in the gold jacket who filled arenas and sold records by the millions. To one little girl, he was just Daddy.
That little girl was Lisa Marie Presley, his only child. She grew up inside Graceland, the famous mansion in Memphis, Tennessee that Elvis bought when he was 22 and turned into a home. Most children her age were catching the school bus at sunrise. Lisa Marie lived on a very different clock.
Years later she talked about what those days were really like, and her description of the household is one most families would never recognize.
The Presleys were night people.
“Nocturnal,” she called it. “Go to bed at four or five A.M. and get up at two or three the next afternoon.”
Think about that. While most of Memphis was heading out for lunch, the Presleys were just waking up. The lights at Graceland came on when everyone else’s were going off.
And through all of it, Lisa Marie says she was having the time of her life. Her dad was playful and loved to surprise her.
“It was always a lot of fun,” she remembered. “He was very mischievous.”
So what did the King of Rock n’ Roll actually look like when he finally lay down to rest after those long nights?
Lisa Marie answered that in just a few words, and they might be the sweetest picture of a daughter watching her father you’ll ever read.
“When he slept,” she said, “he was a bear in hibernation.”
A bear in hibernation. Gentle and tucked away in the quiet of his own home, worn out from the long nights, while the world outside kept spinning. That’s how his little girl saw him. Not the superstar the rest of us knew, but a tired dad who was finally still.
There’s something in that. Behind the jumpsuits and the screaming crowds, Elvis was somebody’s father first. And the person who knew that softer side of him best was the small girl wandering those halls at two in the afternoon.
Lisa Marie carried that love her whole life, and later she found a way to sing with him again.
In 2018 her family took one of Elvis’s own gospel recordings and let Lisa Marie add her own voice to it, so father and daughter could share a song at last. The official music video weaves in real home movies of the two of them together.

Watch her sing beside him and you can see exactly what she meant about those Graceland days. The closeness comes right through, under all the fame.
Elvis gave the world a sound it had never heard before. But to Lisa Marie he was the bear who slept while everyone else was awake, and she treasured those nights.
