On 14 June 1995, the King of Pop and the daughter of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, sat down together in front of Diane Sawyer for ABC’s PrimeTime Live. The world had spent a year insisting their marriage was fake — a business arrangement, a publicity stunt, anything but real.
So Sawyer asked the question everybody wanted answered. “Do you both have sex?” And Lisa Marie Presley’s response was so blunt that it is still the most quoted moment of the entire broadcast.
“Do we have sex?” she repeated back. Then, without pausing: “Yes! Yes! Yes!”
She was not finished. Asked about the theory that she had married him to bring Michael and his fortune into Scientology, which she was a member of at the time, she went straight at it. “I’m not going to marry anyone for any reason other than the fact that I’ve fallen in love with them,” she said. “And they can eat it if they want to think anything different.” It is not the language of a woman reading from a script.

The marriage itself had been a genuine shock. They had wed in the Dominican Republic on 26 May 1994, and the news landed with the public like a hoax. Two of the most famous surnames in music history joined together, apparently overnight. What almost nobody knew was that they had actually met when Lisa Marie was about six years old, at a Jackson concert in Las Vegas, and reconnected as adults years later.
Her own account, written in her posthumous memoir From Here to the Great Unknown, is far more revealing than anything she said on television. She described thinking at first that he was simply lonely and needed a friend — “But he was pursuing me.”

Then, in 1994, while she was still married to her first husband Danny Keough, Michael said it outright. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m completely in love with you. I want us to get married and for you to have my children.” Her reaction: “I’m really flattered; I can’t even talk.” And then, in her words, she realized she was in love with him too.
They did not stop at the interview. That same year, Lisa Marie starred in the video for “You Are Not Alone,” in which the two of them appear together wearing almost nothing. It was designed to settle the argument permanently, and the director’s memory of the shoot is genuinely sweet — he described them as having an innocent, playful relationship that felt completely real.
It did not last. They separated in December 1995, and Lisa Marie filed for divorce the following January, citing irreconcilable differences. Her publicist announced they had agreed to go their separate ways but remained good friends.
For years, the “Yes! Yes! Yes!” outburst was treated as a punchline, as proof that the marriage was staged. Read her memoir and the opposite emerges.
