As the countdown to the American Idol Season 23 finale continued, rumors started flying: Was John Foster already signed to a label? Did his original song “Tell That Angel I Love Her” really top the charts? With fans speculating online, the Louisiana country singer finally cleared the air: “I am not signed to or affiliated with any record label whatsoever.”

During a post-rehearsal interview in Hollywood, John confirmed that he only signed the standard tentative agreement with 19 Entertainment, which every Idol finalist is required to do. As for his song topping the Billboard charts? “As much as I wish that were true, it’s not,” John said with a laugh. “I made some waves on the iTunes country charts, but I haven’t hit No. 1 anywhere.”

Whether he’s spotted at Disneyland or starting a Facebook fundraiser for cancer research, fans say he’s one of the most humble and authentic Idol contestants in years.

Earlier in the season, Foster surprised everyone with a jazzy performance inspired by Princess Tiana. It was bold, different, and showed a whole new side of him one that made Carrie Underwood say he could win the entire thing.
