On a Sunday in the summer of 1954, a 12-year-old boy named Jerry was hanging around a dusty field in a poor part of Memphis, looking for something to do.
A local high-school football player, Red West, needed one more body to round out a game of touch football. He waved the kid over to fill the spot.
In the huddle, the quarterback sized up the new boy and said, “OK, I know you’re the young kid. Can you catch the ball?”
That quarterback was 19 years old. And here’s the thing Jerry had no way of knowing as he stood there in the dirt.
That very same week, a Memphis radio DJ named Dewey Phillips had been spinning a brand-new record by a local unknown, a singer he kept calling “a boy from Humes High.” The city was just starting to buzz about the voice on that record.
The singer on the radio and the quarterback calling the plays were the same young man. It was Elvis Presley.
Now, you’d think that would be the whole story. A fun little “guess who I played ball with” memory to tell the grandkids. For most people it would be.
It wasn’t for Jerry.
Because that pickup game turned out to be the start of something. What happened in the years that followed, and where that one Sunday afternoon eventually led this kid from a rough Memphis neighborhood, is the part worth hearing in his own voice.
Jerry Schilling has told this story himself, sitting right there at Graceland. Listen to how clearly he still remembers the huddle, the question and the moment he realized who he’d been playing with.

There’s a warmth in the way he tells it that no written version can match. You can hear what that friendship meant to him, decades later, long after the games in the park were over.
It’s a reminder of how Elvis actually was with people. He didn’t have to wave a scared 12-year-old into a game, or remember him, or think of him again. But he did.
Give the clip a watch and let Jerry take you back to that summer Sunday in 1954. Then tell us in the comments. Can you imagine showing up for a pickup game and finding Elvis in the huddle?
