Janet Jackson is never portrayed at all. Fans had wondered why for months, and now Michael’s nephew Jaafar Jackson has offered a surprisingly practical explanation.
Jaafar, who portrays his uncle Michael in the film, told GQ Middle East that Janet may have ideas about eventually making a movie of her own. As he put it, “Janet has ideas of maybe doing her own film.” That could make allowing another production to choose an actress to portray her complicated.
Why Janet Jackson Declined to Be Portrayed in Michael
The explanation adds another layer to what La Toya Jackson revealed at the movie’s Hollywood premiere in April. She confirmed that Janet had been approached about being represented in Michael but chose not to participate. “She was asked and she kindly declined,” La Toya said, adding that her wishes should be respected.
Director Antoine Fuqua also pushed back against the idea that Janet’s absence automatically meant there was a family feud. He said he has respect and love for Janet and emphasized that she remains supportive of Jaafar. Janet herself has not publicly confirmed Jaafar’s suggestion that she plans to make a biopic about her own life.
And Janet certainly has enough history for a movie of her own. Her career stretches from childhood television roles to Control, Rhythm Nation 1814 and a run that made her one of the most successful pop artists of her generation. For now, though, Jaafar’s comments should be treated as a possibility rather than confirmation that a Janet Jackson movie is officially happening.
