When Michael Jackson married Elvis Presley’s only daughter, many people immediately assumed it could not be real.
He was the King of Pop.
She was the daughter of the King of Rock and Roll.
To the outside world, their relationship almost looked too extraordinary to believe.
But years later, Lisa Marie Presley repeatedly insisted that she really had loved Michael.
And her posthumous memoir revealed just how personal their relationship became.
Lisa Marie had first encountered Michael when she was a young girl attending a Jackson 5 concert. They reconnected as adults and became increasingly close in the early 1990s.
According to Lisa Marie, what began as friendship changed during time they spent together in Las Vegas.
Michael eventually told her he was in love with her and wanted to marry her.
Lisa later wrote that by then, she had fallen in love with him too.
They married privately in the Dominican Republic on May 26, 1994, only weeks after Lisa Marie’s divorce from Danny Keough was finalized. Michael was 35 and Lisa Marie was 26.
Lisa Marie Presley Reveals Intimate Details About Michael Jackson
One of the most surprising details appeared decades later in Lisa Marie’s memoir, From Here to the Great Unknown.
She wrote that Michael told her he was still a virgin when their romantic relationship began.
According to Lisa Marie, Michael said his previous relationships with women including Brooke Shields and Tatum O’Neal had not become sexually intimate.
The revelation made Lisa nervous.
But she also remembered Michael taking the initiative when their relationship became physical.
Those memories are significant because their marriage was frequently dismissed in the press as a publicity stunt.
Lisa Marie described something very different.
She said Michael could be surprisingly normal in private.
They spent time talking, traveling and doing ordinary family activities. Her children from her first marriage were also part of their life together.
In her memoir, Lisa Marie wrote that she fell in love with Michael partly “because he was normal.”
She also made an extraordinary admission about that period:
“I was actually so happy. I’ve never been that happy again.”
Their public life looked very different.
In September 1994, Michael and Lisa Marie shocked viewers at the MTV Video Music Awards when Michael kissed her onstage after joking that nobody had believed their marriage would last.
Behind the scenes, however, serious disagreements developed.
Lisa Marie later said she became increasingly uncomfortable with some of the people surrounding Michael and worried about his reliance on medication. She also said disagreements about having children created pressure within the marriage.
By January 1996, Lisa Marie filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
Their marriage had lasted roughly 20 months.
But strangely, their relationship did not simply end with the divorce.
In a 2010 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Lisa Marie said she and Michael spent several years afterward repeatedly discussing whether they should get back together.
She described a cycle of reconnecting, separating and considering reconciliation that continued for years.
After Michael passed away in 2009, Lisa Marie publicly admitted that she had spent years wondering what she could have done differently.
Her later memoir made that emotional connection even clearer.
Their marriage was short.
It was complicated.
And many people doubted it from the beginning.
But according to the woman who was actually married to Michael Jackson, the feelings behind it were very real.
Two people born into extraordinary fame found something unexpectedly normal in each other, even if they could not make it last.
