Hudson Westbrook’s new album is out now. His mom says she’s still the one who got him started.

Hudson Westbrook is a No. 1 country singer now, and his second album came out this week. His mom, Heidi, still likes to remind him who sent him off to record his first hit.

“Made You Look” arrived on Friday, Nov. 6. It follows “Texas Forever,” his first full album, from July 2025.

If his name is new to you, Hudson is 22 and grew up on a cattle farm in Stephenville, Texas, where he showed pigs through Future Farmers of America. His song “House Again” went to No. 1 on the Mediabase country radio chart early this year, when he was just 21. This spring he picked up his first ACM Awards nomination, for New Male Artist of the Year. He told American Songwriter that George Strait and John Mayer were big influences on him growing up.

Music was not the plan at first. Hudson enrolled at Texas Tech to become a landman, the oil and gas job his grandfather and uncle did. Then a song he wrote on his phone took off online, and he left school to chase it.

He did not tell his mother first. On “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Hudson said she heard the news along with everyone else, when he said it on stage at Austin City Limits in October 2024 and she was out in the crowd. In a 2025 interview with People, he remembered her coming backstage “waiting to chew me [out] like, ‘You did what!'”

She came around fast. According to Holler’s account of the Drew Barrymore visit, Hudson remembered her telling him, “But, I want you to chase your dreams.” Then she added, “You can always go back to college, you can’t always chase a music career. Like, it’s hot while you got it, you got the writing while you have it. You’re young. Chase it.”

Hudson tells Drew Barrymore about leaving college for music

Hudson made his first daytime TV appearance on Drew’s show in March 2026, and leaving college is a big part of the talk.

Heidi had also bet on her son in another way, and she likes to bring it up.

While talking with RFD-TV about how his career began, Hudson smiled about the line his mom uses on him, Holler reported on Nov. 6. “She’s like, ‘I’m still the one that gave you $400 and a heart-rock and told you to go record your first song,'” he said.

He doesn’t argue with her. “That’s how it all started. She gave me $400 and left the heart-rock in my truck, and said, ‘Go record ‘Two Way Drive’. And it’s crazy to even think that I recorded a song for $400 at this point. But yeah, it’s cool.”

So the song that launched him was paid for with $400 from his mom, and it came with a small rock shaped like a heart, waiting for him in the cab of his truck. Hudson didn’t say where she found the rock or whether he kept it.

“Two Way Drive” became his first big hit. Holler reports it reached No. 1 on Texas radio in 2024.

By early 2026, he had a national No. 1 of his own.

Heidi got a night out of it, too. Holler reports that she walked the 2025 CMA Awards red carpet beside her son. This year’s CMA Awards air Nov. 18 on ABC, and Holler wondered if she might get another invitation. If she does, nobody would blame her for reminding him one more time who paid for that first song.
