Jordan McCullough Paints the Stage with “Colors of the Wind”

As the lights dimmed for the final performance of Disney Night, the American Idol stage felt like it was waiting for something truly grand. Jordan McCullough, our favorite worship leader, stepped up to the stage to close the night.

He didn’t just sing a song; he delivered a masterpiece that proved exactly why he earned his spot in the Top 7.

Jordan chose the timeless classic “Colors of the Wind” from the 1995 Disney movie Pocahontas. This song has a massive history! It was written by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz and originally sung by Judy Kuhn in the film. When it first came out, it was a huge success, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song, a Golden Globe, and even a Grammy. A pop version by Vanessa Williams also hit number 4 on the Billboard charts. The song is all about respecting nature and seeing the world through someone else’s eyes, making it a deeply emotional choice.

The “Behind the Scenes” (BTS) moments with guest mentor Jennifer Hudson were just as exciting as the performance itself. Jennifer actually remembered Jordan! She had commented on one of his singing videos years ago, so their meeting was a total “full circle” moment. During their rehearsal, JHud gave him a brilliant tip: she told him to make the moment right before the key change the “big moment” of the performance. She wanted him to lead the audience into the high notes with power and soul.

When Jordan finally performed, he took that advice to heart. He started the song with a soft, beautiful tone, but by the end, he was hitting one “God-tier” note after another. The energy in the room was so high that Jennifer Hudson couldn’t contain herself. For the second time that night, she threw her shoe at a contestant! It was the ultimate sign of respect. She even threw a second shoe because she loved it so much.

The other judges were just as stunned. Lionel Richie told the crowd to “shut your mouth” because he was so impressed, and Carrie Underwood called the performance “perfect.”

Jordan’s journey from singing in his church to receiving a “double shoe throw” from an EGOT winner like Jennifer Hudson is a true “dreams come true” story. He proved that when you have a gift that big, the whole world can’t help but stop and listen. Jordan didn’t just sing about the colors of the wind—he made us see them!
