In May 1994, the world found out that Michael Jackson had married Lisa Marie Presley — the King of Pop and the only child of the King of Rock and Roll. It landed like a hoax. Nobody had seen them together. Nobody knew they were close. The whole thing happened over the phone.
They had actually met once before, decades earlier. Michael was a young star, and Lisa Marie was about six, taken to see her father perform in Las Vegas. They didn’t meet again as adults until November 1992, at a mutual friend’s house in Los Angeles, to discuss her music career.
And then, in her words, they “just clicked.”

What followed was not dates or dinners. It was hours on the phone. She wrote about it in her memoir, published after her death, and her description is very plain: they would speak on the phone “for long periods of time,” over and over, for months.
At that stage she thought she understood what was happening. “I thought he was lonely and needed a friend,” she wrote. Then the correction that changes everything: “But he was pursuing me.”
The timing matters. This was 1993, and the first allegations against Michael had just become public. He was on tour, in pain, and by every account collapsing. Lisa Marie said outright that she believed he was innocent and wanted to help him. “I started falling for him. I wanted to save him. I felt that I could do it.”

During one of those calls, late in 1993, he asked her the question. According to biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli, it surprised them both. “If I asked you to marry me, would you do it?”
She was still married to Danny Keough. She said yes anyway.
Then, in one of the most human details in the whole story, Michael abruptly announced he had to go to the bathroom — and came back a moment later to tell her his love for her was real, and she had to believe him.
They married in the Dominican Republic in May 1994, weeks after her divorce. The world had no idea any of it was coming.
